This was done for a Tom an executive who was retiring after 35 years from the Polly O Division of kraft Foods. Tom was an avid Golfer who insisted on wearing his old scuffed up "lucky " golf shoes. He was also a NY Yankees fan, and was famous for saying, It is, what it is" and "you cant Reinvent the wheel" . My First choice for the caricature was to incorporate the Polly O block of Cheese as a Footrest, calling attention to the golf shoes that you otherwise wouldnt notice as much, had he been drawn standing. The company must have felt that it was too revolting an image, and rejected it, in place of a normal footrest instead. They also requested I can the position of the Kraft Logo which I was sad to do since I felt having it at face level made it appear that he was a character on a Kraft Box of Macoroni, but I did change it. In Freelancing it's really important to comply with the clients requests even though as artists we have wilder ideas! The company was totally satisfied with the changes made, and so I live to create another piece of artwork for a great company.

Trader Joes Sign

One of the great things about Trader Joe's besides the friendly service and the great food that you cant find anywhere else, is the fantastic hand painted signs that they commission artists to do from time to time. > I got an opportunity to paint one for their Hewlett location when trying out for a job. My assignment was to paint a catchy sign for their Trail Mix Product> I was given the copy and got immediately to work. They loved the sign, but couldn't hire me at the moment. I'd jump at the chance for working with them again, maybe better luck next time. and by the way, that Trail Mix tastes REALLY great!!!

I painted this sign directly on blackboard using paint markers of various thick nesses and even included a caricature of the stores Captain! He really got a kick out of that.

Subwaysurfer Gift Caricature Section

I frequently get requests from clients to do gift caricatures for business clients, friends, and love ones. I incorporate a person's favorite hobby, sayings, or aspirations, into the caricature once I gather all the info. Above all when Im doing this type of work I steer away from the SXTREME caricature style that i love, and instead make them look ...er... "better" than they look!

Exaggerated Features Magazine Article and Pictures

This caricature was used to accompany an article I wrote for the Caricature Industry magazine, "Exaggerated Features". I included additional illustrations for the captions as well, but space did not allow to print everything. Oh, well, that's how publishing is.
This is my second article I wrote for Exaggerated Features( I wrote/illustrated one previously in 2006 on "How to Subway Surf featured here also.) and I feel honored to be in it, especially when I consider the amount of raw talent the organization has among its membership. They like me! they really like me! sniff.... sob....whimper...

Caricature Artist, ALison Gelbman at www.caricatureexpress.com has one of those personalities that practically "beg" to be animated. I plan on doing a short feature around her character one of these days and it took me months to come up with the perfect character design for her She goes by the moniker, "the Nice caricature artist" but can be pretty nasty sometimes based on mood.
Butchie, my dog, is another character that begs to be animated, and I chose toanimate his PERSONALITy... if that makes sense_ rather than do a literal exaggeration of hi. I like this design because its nice and comfact and i can see myself doing it EASILY something I learned the HARD way working with various animation producers.

Misc crowd scenes needed for the film. These were really great to do as I added friends, various people I sketched on the subway and even myself. This crowd scene was originally drawn for the opening sequenc of the fil where people are lined up in droves for the big funeral. The scene is supposed to end by showing celebs, mistresses,etc. the illos had to be cut from the film as time and money dictated the decision. A shame too, because it took a looong time to draw this.

The funniest thing about the Castro's Funeral series is that Castro didnt die as soon as we expected when I was approached by Howard Tirsky to design and layout the film in 2007. The animation team worked long and tirelessly to come out with the film just as Castro died , and we waited and waited and waited for that to happen, and it never did! We finally HAD to release the film before he died, fearing that some other creative person who beat us to the punch and ruin all of our hard work.

Theres this outrageous scene in the film where castro slides into hell and meets teh Pope(there on a guest pass) and Ronald Reagan. Now THAT was fun to draw, expecially Reagan who I never caricatured before. This is my absolute favorite film of the Snide Tv shorts. It has a wild cast of characters lots of action and zanyness that reminds me of those warner Brothers shorts they used to do when caricaturing celebs.

More background characters that appear in the opening "song" sequence. The shoeshine man who he hands a resume, The White House Butler who serves him Breakfast, George Bush handing Resume to the viewer, which was cut form the final, another shot of the shoeshine man with his box sign and chair. Im really anal when it comes to detail , even in cartoons. In order to give the scene a certain authenticity, I went to The East 42nd street Train Station at Grand Central to observe some shoe shine men in their environment. Its important to me to have this "back story" going on in my head in aorder to draw properly.

The Education Episode This is the Principal character, who interviews George Bush for a teacher position. I developed the character based on various authority images Ive seen throughout the years. Howard Tirsky, art director, laughed when he saw the results , remarking that I unintentionally made the guy look EXACTLY like his neighbor,and now He was going to get blamed for caricaturing him!

Larger than Life Roughs and comic

Last year I did some webcomics /storyboards for author Nathan Scott's, series Larger than Life. It was a fun project where I was given a lot of freedom in designing the look of the characters and the pacing of the storylines. Just found one of the original roughs hiding in the ole drawing pad.

I also have included here an excerpt from the "computer" episode. Nathan had this concept where "sweet Gee", Seven's computer, gets a mysterious computer virus. Seven's friend, "Boye," a Japanese computer whizkid(drawn in the Chibi style)fixes Gee a little TOO good, and the boys get sucked literally into the computer hardrive and enter that computerized world. Now this is not an "original" story, I admit, but I had a great opportunity to play around with a lot of those "useless" filters in photoshop and it really helped to enhance the story. I remember reading a scott mccloud article about doing this and it was great fun. Im definitely going to revisit this concept.

You always "hate" that thing that you dont do particularly well. I used to be one of those artists who loved to "just draw" figures floating in my sketchbooks without a sense of "place". In animation,however,, you must have a sense of place for your figures, and Ive been forced to grow by having to draw them. Im not as good as Id like to be but not as bad as I used to be.I will no doubt improve with practice. These are a few drawings taken from the George Bush Job Interviews series.

Everyone needs a place where they can be themselves and experiment. Lately, Ive been going through my own sketchbooks, and looking at my other blog spots and saying, "gee, I really need to grow more as an artist" I think Ive gotten into a rut and am a little too comfortable with my drawing style, and have become obsessed with making and posting only "beautiful drawings." I want a place where I can show my rough edges , my experiments, so that interested parties can see my thought processes. Also, as an animator and storyboarder, Ive recently discovered that people... like to see this type of stuff so... here goes....
